Facilities

We deliver comprehensive clinical services at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo (HCFMRP-USP), the largest public tertiary healthcare institution in the region, which serves a population of approximately 2.5 million people. As a high-complexity referral centre, HCFMRP-USP provides a broad spectrum of medical specialties, advanced surgical procedures, and cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic services, both within the hospital and through its affiliated network of healthcare units.

Our team leads the Mastology Service, the Gynaecological Oncology Unit, and the Pelvic Pain and Minimally Invasive Gynaecological Surgery Centre. These services are not only reference centres for highly complex clinical and surgical care but also play a crucial role in academic training and translational research.

We are deeply committed to medical education at multiple levels. Our units serve as key teaching facilities for undergraduate medical students from the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, offering structured clinical clerkships and hands-on experiences. Additionally, we provide comprehensive residency programmes in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Mastology, and Gynaecological Oncology, recognised nationally for their excellence.

Furthermore, we regularly host visiting physicians, postgraduate fellows, and external trainees—both from Brazil and abroad—who seek advanced training in areas such as minimally invasive gynaecological surgery (laparoscopy and robotic surgery), chronic pelvic pain management, mastology, and gynaecological oncology.

Beyond clinical care and education, our teams are actively engaged in research aimed at advancing knowledge in women’s health, cancer care, and chronic pain, with several ongoing projects in collaboration with national and international research institutions.

The Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) is a national reference centre in women's health, providing excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research. The department offers comprehensive services that cover the full spectrum of gynaecological and obstetrical care, including:

  • General Gynaecology: Diagnosis and management of a wide range of gynaecological conditions.

  • Endocrine and Reproductive Gynaecology: Specialised care for hormonal disorders, menstrual irregularities, and infertility.

  • Human Reproduction: Evaluation and treatment of infertility, including access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART).

  • Gynaecological Oncology: Comprehensive management of gynaecological cancers, including surgery, chemotherapy, and follow-up.

  • Urogynaecology: Treatment of pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

  • Mastology: Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast diseases, including breast cancer.

  • Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology: Specialised care for children and adolescents, addressing congenital anomalies, pubertal disorders, and gynaecological conditions in young patients.

  • Menopause and Climacteric Care: Holistic management of menopause-related symptoms and postmenopausal health.

  • Contraception: Personalised counselling and provision of contraceptive methods.

  • Chronic Pelvic Pain: Multidisciplinary management of pelvic pain syndromes, including endometriosis and complex chronic pain disorders.

In the field of Obstetrics, the department provides care for both low-risk pregnancies and high-risk maternal-fetal conditions, with expertise in managing complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, fetal growth restriction, multiple pregnancies, and other complex scenarios.

The department also has a robust infrastructure for diagnostic imaging, offering advanced gynaecological and obstetric ultrasonography, including first-trimester screening, fetal morphology, and Doppler studies.

Surgical expertise is a hallmark of the DGO, encompassing:

  • Conventional open surgery

  • Minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopy and hysteroscopy

  • Robotic-assisted surgery, offering cutting-edge solutions for complex gynaecological procedures such as oncological surgery, deep endometriosis, pelvic floor reconstruction.

Further information about our clinical services, training opportunities, and research activities will be available here shortly.

Our team coordinates the Gynaecology, Obstetrics, and Mastology Biobank, a research infrastructure linked to the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP). Established in 2019, this biobank is a certified, ethically approved facility designed to support high-impact research in women's health.

The biobank currently maintains three well-curated collections of human biological samples, focused on:

  • Endometriosis

  • Breast cancer

  • Ovarian cancer

These collections are systematically associated with extensive clinical, demographic, and phenotypic data, enabling robust translational research, biomarker discovery, genomic studies, and collaborative projects.

Our facility is fully licensed by the Brazilian National Research Ethics Commission (CONEP) under the registration number B-088, granted through the decision No. 16/2019-CONEP/SECNS/MS, dated 25 March 2019 (Process 25000.068334/2018-49). Additionally, the biobank has successfully completed the documental validation process with CONEP (Opinion No. 7.621.689, CAAE 87580125.6.0000.5440), ensuring continuous compliance with the highest ethical, legal, and operational standards required by the Brazilian regulatory framework for human biobanking.

The official title of the facility is:
"Gynaecology, Obstetrics, and Mastology Biobank of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP)."
Biobank Director: Omero Benedicto Poli Netto
Managing Institution: DGO - FMRP-USP

We are currently undergoing planned expansions, including the implementation of new collections related to benign gynaecological diseases, chronic pelvic pain subtypes, and future integration with multi-omics platforms.

As a research-enabling facility, the biobank is open to collaborations with national and international academic institutions, industry partners, and consortia. If you are interested in collaborating, accessing biological samples, or supporting our activities, please do not hesitate to contact us. More detailed information about sample access policies, standard operating procedures, and governance will be available here soon.

We currently conduct our wet-lab activities at the Laboratory of Gynaecology and Obstetrics on the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto campus. This multi-user facility shares services and equipment with the entire university community, offering comprehensive support and a range of instruments for preparing and analysing biological samples, as well as for cell culture. We have recently established our Computational Laboratory, which provides a data storage server to all faculty members associated with the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and are now setting up a dedicated data processing server. We will soon provide more detailed information here.
